Seabulk Tankers owns five new double-hull petroleum and chemical tankers. With their double hull construction, state-of-the-art electronics and safety systems, and skilled crews, the new tankers provide the safest form of waterborne transportation in U.S. waters. Under the terms of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90), all single-hull vessels must be phased out of the domestic Jones Act trade by 2015. Because of their double-hull construction, the new vessels have no retirement date under OPA 90.
These 46,000-dwt tankers are engaged in the domestic Jones Act trade, which limits the shipment of cargo between U.S. ports to U.S.-built, U.S.-crewed, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-owned vessels. They are the newest self-propelled vessels in the market and transport petroleum products, chemicals and crude oil along the Atlantic, Gulf and Pacific coasts, and Alaska.
Three of the vessels, are petroleum product carriers also suitable for crude oil transportation. The other two vessels, are sophisticated multi-purpose tankers capable of carrying a broad range of specialty chemicals and petroleum products. At 14,000 horsepower, these double-hull tankers deliver an impressive operational speed of 17 knots. Our primary customers are chemical and oil companies, utilities and large industrial consumers of fuel.
